TONI FOUNDER ADRIAN VOSS, TALKS ALL THINGS SLOW FASHION OUT OF HIS MULLUMBIMBY STUDIO

HOW DID YOU FIND STARTING A BRAND IN A PANDEMIC?

It made me understand that anything is possible even in a pandemic, as long as you have fun with it. It has been and is a huge learning experience, interacting with people and with myself. Being clear and making myself understood, not just to others but also finding my personal way to establish my personal beliefs.

IS THERE SOMETHING SPECIFIC YOU ARE WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT?

Creating items ‘made to order’ is keeping me busy and I simply enjoy doing it. As seasons change I am working more on blanket jackets. But I also try to explore the artistic side of my making.

HOW HAVE YOU DEVELOPED YOUR CREATIVE CONFIDENCE?

I always wanted to create from a very early age. I got my first sewing machine from mom and started to just stitch fabrics together. The idea of using a 2 dimensional medium and just by sewing it together felt incredible. I used old towels my grandmother had and made little zipped bags. It makes me happy to know that by using something like old blankets, tea towels and other preloved items, I can express myself and inspire others.

IS THERE SOMEONE YOU DAYDREAM ABOUT WORKING WITH IN THE FUTURE?

I always daydream about creating more things with my friends. I love collaborating with artists and other likeminded creatives.

WHAT WAS THE LAST THING THAT REALLY INSPIRED YOU?

A green blanket I found.

HAVE YOU GOT ANYTHING EXCITING COMING UP FOR TONI?

I am excited to create every day. Making things and having conversations with friends. I don’t necessarily have anything exciting coming up, but getting orders and working on them is what gets me excited.

HEY ADRIAN, HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO TO PEOPLE YOU'VE JUST MET?

I believe the understanding that clothing is handmade and should support individuality. I don’t necessarily see my practice as a traditional fashion label. I want to create one off pieces dedicated to the person who ordered it from Toni.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT TONI, AND HOW IT CAME TO BE?

It all came from the idea that there is already enough for us. I love going to charity shops and finding preloved items like woollen blankets, towels and big jeans I can take apart. The idea to make ‘made to order’ items feels very personal to me and the person I interact with. I supply the design, pattern and idea, I believe that is what makes Toni so individual.

WHAT ARE THE BEST PLACES YOU FIND INSPIRATION?

I get inspired when I go out to op shops, finding items which spark interest to me and I get all excited from it. I love going to an art gallery.

WHAT'S SOMETHING YOU ARE SUPER PROUD OF THAT YOU'VE MADE?

I am proud that my project I started a year ago has found so much admiration. It makes me happy to know that I can be part of a community. It makes me proud to know that people enjoy my work.
